Description of Process for this Submission
The subject of “Olga triptych 2/3” is Olga Höcker, a 20th ct. award-winning typographer, lettering artist, author, and the first female professor at the Academy of Art in Zagreb, Croatia.
Her lettering was never produced in metal or wood. Her biography had never been printed, and she was nearly forgotten.
I found and translated her handwritten biography into English. I set it in 10-pt, 11-pt, and 14-pt Century Expanded and Caslon metal type, including gaps for indecipherable words, to capture the silence that enveloped her life’s work.
I printed it next to 22-line wood type that I designed by modernizing Höcker’s lettering, called Yugoslav Script, based on features of Glagolitic, Cyrillic, and Latin script.
Tiporenesansa, a letterpress studio in Ljubljana, Slovenia, created wood-type matrices of my design and produced the 22-line Ms. Olga wood type that I used to print these prints.
This print celebrates Höcker’s legacy and is intended to document her life & work in institutional archives.
