Description of Process for this Submission
This monoprint is part of a series exploring the matriarchs of my family through the images and artifacts they left behind. Each contains 18-27 layers or runs through the printing press. The first layers are paper litho, collagraphs, and pressure printing using type-high bases of mounted plexi as the "litho stone" and transfer surface. These layers are followed by linocut symbols and shapes, also mounted to type-high. Each piece is finished with layers of letterpress, Hamilton wood type and ornamentation, offering the direction and balance needed for each piece. Letterpress is included directly and indirectly. Some images like the binoculars are from quite small electrotypes. To scale them they were printed the traditional way then the print was scanned, enlarged, and used to create a paper litho matrix.
